Kikori November Social Emotional Learning Calendar

Growing Gratitude: Harvest Kindness and Giving with Kikori Social Emotional Learning Calendar

In November, students will embrace Kindness and Giving as core values within their classroom community. This month focuses on turning thankfulness into a daily habit, fostering generosity, and encouraging students to give back in meaningful ways, both in and outside the classroom. Acts of kindness and giving can transform the classroom into a space where students feel valued, connected, and supported. When students actively practice empathy, gratitude, and generosity, they create a ripple effect that not only strengthens peer relationships but also builds a more inclusive and caring school culture. Through small daily acts, students learn that giving—whether through words of encouragement, lending a hand, or contributing to their community—can profoundly impact their own well-being and the lives of others.

November Experiential SEL Overview

  • Nov Week 1: Self-Awareness – Self-confidence

By developing self-confidence, students feel more secure in expressing appreciation and recognizing the positive contributions of others, fostering an environment of kindness.

  • Nov Week 2: Self-Management – Self-motivation

Practicing self-motivation helps students take initiative in offering support and kindness to their peers, making giving a personal and active choice.

  • Nov Week 3: Social Awareness – Perspective Taking

Perspective taking enables students to understand and empathize with others, enhancing their ability to offer kindness and thoughtful gestures that resonate with their classmates’ needs.

  • Nov Week 4: Building Relationships - Teamwork

Teamwork builds a collaborative spirit, encouraging students to support one another, share responsibilities, and give generously to create a harmonious classroom community.

By the end of November, students will cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of gratitude and kindness, recognizing how these values enhance their relationships and sense of community. Through their experiences, they will discover the joy and fulfillment that arises from giving back, whether it’s through acts of kindness in the classroom or participating in community service projects. This month will empower students to reflect on their contributions and the positive impact they can have on others, reinforcing the idea that kindness is not just an action but a powerful force that fosters connection and belonging within their school and beyond.

Building Habits of Kindness: A Month of Daily Closing Circle Practices

This November, we encourage you to incorporate a 5-10 minute Closing Circle into your daily classroom routine. This intentional practice not only fosters a sense of community but also provides a consistent opportunity for students to develop key social-emotional skills, including kindness, reflection, celebration, and gratitude. In Kikori's Closing Circle, students engage in the same activity daily for a week, gradually building positive habits through repetition (Dweck, 2015).

Here is an overview of our 4 November Circle Time activities, promoting students to practice kindness and giving (along with the research behind their effectiveness!) :

  1. November Week 1: Appreciation Sheets

Students use Appreciation Sheets to pass around notes of gratitude, building a culture of kindness. This practice encourages students to recognize and express appreciation for their peers, which research shows can increase prosocial behavior and well-being (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). By the end of the week, students have a collection of affirmations, reinforcing kindness in everyday interactions.

  2. November Week 2: Group Poem

During Group Poem, students collaboratively write a poem, adding new lines each day. This activity promotes self-reflection and creative expression, which John Dewey emphasized as vital for emotional growth and understanding (Dewey, 1933). By week’s end, students gain confidence in sharing and reflecting on their experiences as a group.

  3. November Week 3: Way to Go

The Way to Go activity allows students to celebrate their peers’ achievements. Daily recognition of success helps create a supportive classroom environment, reinforcing positivity and peer encouragement. According to Fredrickson (2001), celebrating positive emotions strengthens social bonds and builds resilience.

  4. November Week 4: Simply Notice Gratitude

In Simply Notice Gratitude, students take time each day to identify something they are thankful for. This daily practice fosters a habit of focusing on positive experiences, which Robert Emmons found to significantly improve emotional well-being and outlook (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). By week’s end, students develop an internal habit of gratitude.

Kikori's Goal: Empowering Every Student to Practice Kindness and Giving!

At Kikori, we believe that acts of kindness and generosity create stronger, more connected communities. How does Kikori help you build a classroom environment where students feel empowered to practice kindness and giving every day? Through our SEL Calendar, we offer daily Morning Meetings and Advisory lessons that provide structured opportunities for students to share and reflect, encouraging a culture of giving and kindness:

  • Monday: Popcorn Sharing

  • Tuesday: Partner Sharing

  • Wednesday: Round Robin Sharing

  • Thursday: Journal Writing

  • Friday: Small Groups

These varied sharing activities give students opportunities to express gratitude, appreciate one another, and offer support in different formats. Each interaction strengthens bonds, fostering an environment where kindness becomes second nature. As students share and receive positive reinforcement, they begin to naturally offer support to others, cultivating a sense of giving and empathy.

We also incorporate Think-Pair-Shares into many activities, encouraging students to connect with one another before sharing with the larger group. This reflective practice not only builds confidence but also deepens students' empathy, helping them understand and respond to others with compassion. Through these daily routines, students learn that small acts of kindness—whether through words, listening, or support—have a powerful impact on their classroom community.

Each activity provides you with instructions that follow Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle. This means the activities help youth actively engage and then provides reflection questions related to the activity.

These questions help youth reflect and build self- and social-awareness (what happened during the activity?), make meaningful connections to their own lives (how did what happened during the activity connect to other experiences?), and engage in personal growth (what are they going to take from this activity into their lives?)
